Journal of Byzantin Studies (JOeB) / Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik

The journal was founded in 1951 as the ‘Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinischen Gesellschaft’, was given the name ‘Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik’ with volume 18 (1969), and in 2021, in consultation with the Presidium of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Dean of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna, the English name was extended to ‘Journal of Byzantine Studies (JOeB) / Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik’.

The sponsoring institutions are the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna and the Department of Byzantine Research at the Institute for Medieval Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.  An overview of the individual volumes and how to order them can be found on the homepage of the publishing house of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The current main editors are Christophe Erismann, Christian Gastgeber, Johannes Preiser-Kapeller, Claudia Rapp and Elisabeth Schiffer, succeeding Herbert Hunger, Wolfram Hörandner and Ewald Kislinger.

The acceptance of contributions (in German, English, French, Italian) takes place in two steps, first through an internal review and, in the positive case, through an anonymous double-blind peer review by two external experts; submitted contributions must follow the citation and transcription rules listed below, taking into account their own abbreviations (list of sigla).

The editorial board and editorial team are supported in their work by a scientific advisory board made up of 16 leading international experts.

The annual volume is always published in March of the following year. The deadline for the submission of articles for the next volume is 30 April. For the external peer reviews, a review period of 1 to 3 months can be expected, depending on the length of the article.
